Dr Jason Mansfield began the business by operating out of a ute in October 2020. Starting off with just himself, he soon recruited nurse Kate, and together they engaged in house visits and farm visits in the Bowen and Whitsundays area. The next step was to purchase an old furniture warehouse on Leichhardt Street, Bowen, which began the extensive process of fitting out an entirely new, fully-functional clinic. As the work progressed, so too did the team, and by the clinic opening in June 2021, the team including a receptionist and multiple vet nurses and animal attendants.

The clinic continues to grow in size- both in team and potential. The possibility (and attachment) to change continually encourages the team to reach its full potential.

Jason Mansfield

Veterinarian & Practice Owner (BVSc)

Most people will recognise him from his work in Proserpine and the Whitsundays, however for those who haven't met him, here's a little bit about Dr Jason Mansfield. The driving force behind the business, he is no stranger to hard work and looks forward to meeting you and your animals.

"I grew up in Sarina on a small cattle property. I have always loved and enjoyed animals growing up on the farm and ever since I was 6 years old, I remember wanting to be a vet. I graduated from James Cook University in December 2014 and was given the opportunity to work at Proserpine Vet Surgery in 2015. I have lived and breathed Veterinary Science ever since that date and have learnt it’s not a job, it’s a lifestyle and the relationship you build with clients and their animals is always something I find very special. I am a true mixed practice veterinarian and enjoy working with all animals, big and small, to help with their health dilemmas. Those who know me know that I do like my cows, but I try not to let the horses, dogs and cats know that. Even though I am new to Bowen it still feels like home is just down the road, if you see me down the street feel free to stop me and say g’day."

Mel Cavacas

Veterinarian (BVSc)

"I grew up on a small property South of Proserpine and have too many pets of my own to name! My parents indulged my love of animals from a young age, which encouraged my drive to become a vet. I love all aspects of the veterinary industry but my main passion lies in surgery and ultrasonography. I enjoy working with animals both small and large, and enjoy the different challenges associated with their varied illnesses. I graduated in 2014 (alongside Jason) and have had the pleasure of working in Brisbane, Sarina and Proserpine before joining the great team at GWVS (which of course is the best so far). I enjoy all aspects of small-town communities and can’t wait to be a familiar face giving the best care possible for you and all your beloved pets!"

Christie Nel

Veterinarian (BVSc)

Christie graduated Veterinary Science from the University of Pretoria (Onderstepoort) in 2019. After completing his Compulsory Community Service year, he then worked a further 18 months in South Africa before joining the GWVS team. During this time, he worked privately with the "regular" kind of animals, as well as the occasional lion and leopard! In his free time he enjoys fishing, spearfishing and exploring our beautiful Whitsunday region.

Georgia's devotion for large animals commenced at a very young age as she grew up on a cattle property west of Bloomsbury. Although cattle & horses have her most interest she still enjoys all aspects of nursing life. Georgia has been nursing since she has finished school, which now has given her over 6+ years experience in the industry. She said "She would not change a thing, this is by far the best, so many opportunities and growth"

Outside of work you will find her competing in challenges/campdrafts and ASH events. She also loves the gym, her Border Collie "Goose", going home to help her folks on their property and most of all having a rum or beer with her mates.
